Microsoft Project 2010 raised the bar in terms of project management software when it was released as it introduced a more streamlined style and powerful tools to aid in successful project management. For example, the Ribbon tab interface to find and use software features and controls was introduced with this software. This is the same tab type than can be seen in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Other new features in Project 2010 included the ability to work with the new Project Server and Project Web Access. Server allows for the storage of multiple projects on a central database with access available to all team members. User controlled scheduling, timeline views and SharePoint synchronization are all available with Project 2010. Similar to other versions of Project, this software is available in Standard and Professional formats.

The Standard version is a good choice for smaller businesses that may not have the budget to support a large project management system. The Professional version allows project managers and team members to create projects from a SharePoint task list. Users can convert SharePoint Foundation 2010 task lists into a Project schedule and synchronization of project schedules that use SharePoint is also possible. In this case, task updates from team members can be received and automatically synched into the project schedule. Note that there are several license types available based on cost and intended use. As an example, a Project Professional 2010 retail box costs more than a Project Professional 2010 Academic Retail Box. Although this is the same software, academic software is geared toward students and as a result, software activation time may be limited. Whereas a retail box software installation will be active for as long as you own the computer, an academic license may only be good for a couple of years. After that time expires, you would need to purchase a license at the non-academic price.
