Install Visio

Visio is a stand-alone application for Windows. It is available as a subscription or non subscription. The steps below will guide you on how to install Visio for each. 


Tip: Before you begin, check to make sure your device meets the minimum requirements. 


System Requirements

Computer and processor1.6 gigahertz (GHz) or faster, 2-core

Memory4 GB RAM; 2 GB RAM (32-bit)

Hard disk4.0 GB of available disk space

Display1280 x 768 screen resolution

GraphicsGraphics hardware acceleration requires DirectX 9 or later, with WDDM 2.0 or higher for Windows 10 (or WDDM 1.3 or higher for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update).

Operating systemWindows 10, Windows Server 2019

BrowserThe current version of Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox. Get more details.

.NET versionSome features may require .NET 3.5 or 4.6 and higher to also be installed. 

OtherInternet functionality requires an internet connection. Fees may apply.

A touch-enabled device is required to use any multitouch functionality, but all features and functions are always available by using a keyboard, mouse, or other standard- or accessible-input device. Note that touch features are optimized for use with Windows 10. 

Product functionality and graphics may vary based on your system configuration. Some features may require additional or advanced hardware or server connectivity.

Cloud file management features require OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint.

Microsoft account or organizational account required for license assignment.



Step 1: Associate Visio with your account


Visio Professional (or Standard)


  1. Go to office.com/setup.
  2. Sign in with an existing or new Microsoft Account and enter your product key.

Note: Once Visio is associated with your Microsoft Account, you no longer need the product key. It will always be linked to your account and you can re-download the app or manage your license from account.microsoft.com.


Visio Online Plan 2

  1. Your work or school account should already have an assigned license for Visio! Go on to Step 2. If you are unable to complete Step 2, contact your IT admin to get a Visio license assigned to you.


Step 2: Sign in to download Visio


Visio Professional (or Standard)


  1. Go to www.office.com and if you're not already signed in, select Sign in.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with Visio.
  3. From the Office home page select Install Office.
  4. In the account.microsoft.com portal, select Services and subscriptions from the header.
  5. Locate the version of Visio you want to install and select Install. If you have multiple Office products you may have to scroll through the list of products associated with this Microsoft account.

Visio Online Plan 2

  1. Go to www.office.com and if you're not already signed in, select Sign in.
  2. Sign in with the work or school account associated with this version of Visio.
  3. From the Office home page select Install Office > Other install options.
  4. From My installs, under Visio, choose your language and the 64-bit or 32-bit version, then select Install Visio. (If you have any other Office apps installed, make sure to select the same bit version for your Visio installation.

Visio should now begin downloading. Follow Step 3: Install Visio to complete the installation.



Step 3: Install Visio

  1. Depending on your browser, select Run (in Edge or Internet Explorer), Setup (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox).

If you see the User Account Control prompt that says, Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? select Yes.

  1. Install should begin
  2. Your install is finished when you see the phrase, "You're all set! Visio is installed now" and an animation plays to show you where to find the Visio app on your computer.

Follow the instructions in the window to find Visio, for example depending on your version of Windows, select Start and then scroll to find Visio from your list of apps.
