The limits of databases

|Standard Edition||Standard Edition is limited to 5 mounted databases per server.|
|Enterprise Edition||Enterprise Edition can scale to 100 mounted databases per server.|
A mounted database
A mounted database is a database that is in use. A mounted database can be an active mailbox database that is mounted for use by clients, or a passive mailbox database that is mounted in recovery for log replication and replay. While you can create more databases than the limits described above, you can only mount the maximum number specified above. The recovery database does not count towards this limit.
These licensing editions are defined by a product key. When you enter a valid license product key, the supported edition for the server is established.
Product keys can be used for the same edition key swaps and upgrades only. They can't be used for downgrades.
- You can use a valid product key to move from the evaluation version (Trial Edition) of Exchange 2016 to either Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition.
- You can also use a valid product key to move from Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition.

In my current position, I am responsible for migrating our United States origination from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange 2016. This includes the Exchange architecture, setup, migration and management. Microsoft Exchange 2016 Enterprise - Open Academic is now our primary (and only) email solution for our entire origination across multiple continents. The reason we switched to Exchange from Notes, is because Exchange provides up-to-date email technology, redundancy/failover, low cost of ownership, scalability and excellent performance.
In this day and age, keeping a history of email (especially sales related) is very important. Microsoft Exchange 2016 Enterprise - Open Academic offers plenty of features to archive, journal, etc., so you can be confident that you can always find email communication when it's needed. This can be a very important liability factor for a business. Overall Exchange just has more features, therefore you can do more with it. It's relatively easy to manage once you know what you are doing and it just runs extremely well. When you need 99.99% email reliability, you can beat the robustness of Exchange.
Powerful email administration. Adding new mailboxes, DL's, and even Exchange servers, is not difficult. It enables us to grow our environment as needed, without any painfully long outage periods. If email is important to your company and you need the tools to manage mailboxes, calendars, etc., then Microsoft Exchange is the go-to email software. For smaller companies, with smaller budgets, this type of system may not be the best.
