Easy learned

Much easier to setup than previous versions. Installation went flawlessly (we built the servers from scratch rather than an in place upgrade. The interface is cleaner, and so far no reliability issues. Some aspects of the IIS server setup are different but otherwise it's working well. Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter 64 Bit - Academic License is a nice improvement over 2012, especially the UI and features. Having containers and the subsystem for linux are great additions. A lot of other features that can be useful to many users.

Smoother than other versions

We recently purchased datacenter licensing to be able to break out the various server roles in our environment. The installation procedure is simple and clean like Server 2010 and we used both Core and Desktop Experience installations. Either are simple to deploy (and in our case, create a VM template), however, you will need to proficient with CLI if you have no GUI. Alternatively, you can manage most of the server from another computer using RSAT. Overall, it seems like Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter 64 Bit - Academic License runs smoother and Microsoft is continuing to improve on the server experience.

The way to go

Having containers and subsystem for linux have been great additions to Windows Server. They're playing nicer with linux which help in mixed organisations. Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter 64 Bit - Academic License is still better overall, 2016 seems to be lot of bugs/glitches/work around if you run into issues. i would recommend to give it a try if you are willing but if you want something that just works out of the box, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter 64 Bit - Academic License is the way to go.
