Microsoft Exchange 2016 Standard - Open License

Microsoft Exchange 2016 is the latest version of this popular email and calendaring software and includes many features to make productivity a safe and secure endeavor.

Popular email and calendaring software

The version of Microsoft Exchange 2016 Standard includes

Data loss prevention

Data loss prevention with more sensitive information types available now rather than as an upgrade.

Enhanced auditing

Enhanced auditing is also available for better reporting and easier integration with third-party apps.

Easier to plan and scale tasks

Simplicity and smarts play key roles in this version of Exchange as its simple architecture makes it easier to plan and scale tasks.

More personalized email inbox

The email inbox is more personalized and has more intelligent features and faster search capabilities to allow your employees to get more done.

Work anywhere

You can also use Exchange 2016 on phones, tablets, desktops and the web as this server powers the latest Outlook.

Exchange 2016 architecture

With Exchange 2016, we reduced the number of server roles to two: the Mailbox and Edge Transport server roles.

The Mailbox server

Edge Transport server roles

Today, CPU horsepower is significantly less expensive and is no longer a constraining factor. With that constraint lifted, the primary design goal for Exchange 2016 is for simplicity of scale, hardware utilization, and failure isolation.

The Mailbox server in Exchange 2016

The Mailbox server in Exchange 2016 includes all of the server components from the Exchange 2013 Mailbox and Client Access server roles:

Mailbox services

Mailbox services include all the traditional server components found in the Exchange 2013 Mailbox server role: the Client Access protocols, Transport service, Mailbox databases, and Unified Messaging. The Mailbox server handles all activity for the active mailboxes on that server.

Client Access services

Client Access services provide authentication, limited redirection, and proxy services. Client Access services don't do any data rendering and offer all the usual client access protocols: HTTP, POP and IMAP, and SMTP.

Proxy traffic

This new flexibility gives you more control in how you move to Exchange 2016 without having to worry about deploying enough front-end capacity to service new Exchange 2016 servers.

Along with the new Mailbox role, Exchange 2016 now allows you to proxy traffic from Exchange 2013 to Exchange 2016 in addition to Exchange 2016 to Exchange 2013.

The Edge Transport role

Additional layers of message protection and security

The Edge Transport role is typically deployed in your perimeter network, outside your internal Active Directory forest, and is designed to minimize the attack surface of your Exchange deployment.
By handling all Internet-facing mail flow, it also adds additional layers of message protection and security against viruses and spam, and can apply transport rules to control message flow.
Note that this is an Open License and is designed for businesses with between two and 250 computers. Open licenses are perpetual licenses and the program term is two years.

Worth the price

Microsoft Exchange Server Standard 2016 Open Government was sold to our company as a needed tool prior to me being hired. Microsoft Exchange Server Standard 2016 Open Government purchase are provided by my medical school and are required software. Word and Powerpoint are regularly used for reading lecture packets, and OneNote is a favorite for annotating lecture slides. Outlook is the most common email program used, although some Mac users prefer to use Mac's mail function. The on-site IT staff are familiar w/ the software and are able to assist when problems arise.

Used by my organization

Microsoft Exchange Server Standard 2016 Open Government is used by most departments in my organization. Outlook is the email client on our PCs. Word is used for most reports or casual text documents. Excel is used for preparing reports. It is also used for analyzing data extracted from various systems for analysis. PowerPoint is used for presentations of providing informal status updates to be shared in an online meeting. Skype for Business is used for IM.

Microsoft Exchange Server Standard 2016 Open Government, The amazing software

It's ubiquitous and therefore widely recognized. Everyone knows how to use it and finding help with problems is easy. It does not perform particularly well, at least on Macs, with some functionality hamstrung. Also, while documents can be saved and stored in the fashion that most people are used to, this manner is not always so nicely suited for lecture notes and assigned readings. Thus, many students use other materials/file management programs/systems.
