Remote Desktop Services

RDS supports sessions and license management, with many improvements to the user experience and license management functions. It also includes native virtual machine (VM) support, as well as server roles to facilitate discovery, connection brokering, server farms (for larger-scale deployments and redundancy) and secure WAN access.

The RDS server role

Formerly known as Terminal Server, Remote Desktop Session Host (RD Session Host) server is the RDS server role. It can deliver both full desktops and individual applications, known as RemoteApp programs. It?s ideal for highly scalable application delivery. Multiple users can log into an RD Session Host server and run applications independently of each other.

Licensing model

The model you choose should depend on whether you have more users or computers. Remember that RDS supports both:

A license for each connecting user or device

Once the licensing grace period is passed, you must have a license for each connecting user or device to connect to an RD Session Host server. You'll also need to activate the RDS Licensing on the server.

Move RDS CALs to new hardware

You'll need to purchase RDS Client Access Licenses (CALs) and install them on the RDS Licensing Server. These RDS CALs will be tied to the server, but RDS lets you move them to new hardware when needed.

  • You can virtualize an RD Session Host server, but you'll likely see a reduction in the number of simultaneous sessions it can support. Be sure to model on the same machine type (physical or virtual) you intend to use.
  • RDS does not have concurrent-user licensing, and the licenses you select must match the mode for which you configure the RD Session Host server.

Minimize cost

  • If you do build a virtual RD Session Host server, you should probably use a server with a processor supporting second-level address translation (SLAT) to reduce the overhead of memory mapping between the physical machine and the VMs.
  • To minimize cost, its also advisable to use a Type 1 hypervisor like Hyper-V, not a Type 2.

I love this option

With Microsoft Server 2012 R2 RDS 1 User CAL ou can move a mailbox between servers in the background, without loss of service. This is possible because the Client Access server now handles all client operations, whereas previously some clients talked directly to the mailbox store. Microsoft also claims to have optimised the Exchange database engine, called the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE), with more efficient schema and fewer input/output operations (IOPS).

I use Exchange 10

I used Microsoft Server 2012 R2 RDS 1 User CAL to replace the Linux system we were using, Cyrus. I am sure it can do more than what I am using it for, but have not had much free time to poke at it. This is the daddy of email servers if you work int he enterprise. I have used open source versions and nothing else really compares. Its a big beast and there is a lot to love and hate about it. The fact is, if you work in IT you need to get to grips with it. I've been using Exchange since 4.0, learned a lot from many migrations from versions 4 and 4.5 to 20... Rock solid exchange server. Not as robust as 2013 but it works pretty awesome as an on premise exchange server.

Hard to master but a good software

We have using microsoft Microsoft Server 2012 R2 RDS 1 User CAL for about a year right now. It has been nothing but a workhorse for us with very few problems. It took some time to learn, but worth it. There are critics out there, but personally, I love Exchange. Simple, effective, little downtime, few problems. Microsoft Server 2012 R2 RDS 1 User CAL runs VERY smooth. It is the very best email and collaboration platform out there, no other vendor systems come close to even touching exchange, This is bar none the best product Microsoft makes.
