Government agencies that use Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Standard as its email client need to purchase licenses that allow for access to the server. Known as Client Access Licenses (CALs), two types are available, User and Device. This is a device CAL that is available via the Microsoft Open Government pricing program. This program is designed for federal, state and local government agencies with between two and 250 computers. This is a perpetual license in the Microsoft Volume Licensing program and the term is two years. A device license is assigned to the employees computer rather than the employee. If an employee leaves the agency or is reassigned, the device license stays in place and a new hire who uses the computer will simply have their email credentials installed on the computer with the device license. Exchange Server 2010 is an award-winning mail server that is flexible, allowing it to perfectly meet a companys needs. Note that this device license does not need to be assigned to a PC. If the company uses laptops exclusively for example, the license would be assigned to the laptop. The employee would not have access to their email using multiple devices.
