The limits of databases

Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 is available in two server editions: Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition.

Edition Database limits
Standard Edition Standard Edition is limited to 5 mounted databases per server.
Enterprise Edition Enterprise Edition can scale to 100 mounted databases per server.

A mounted database

A mounted database is a database that is in use. A mounted database can be an active mailbox database that is mounted for use by clients, or a passive mailbox database that is mounted in recovery for log replication and replay. While you can create more databases than the limits described above, you can only mount the maximum number specified above.

The recovery database does not count towards this limit.

Trial Edition

These licensing editions are defined by a product key. When you enter a valid license product key, the supported edition for the server is established.

Product keys can be used for the same edition key swaps and upgrades only. They can't be used for downgrades.

  • You can use a valid product key to move from the evaluation version (Trial Edition) of Exchange 2016 to either Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition.
  • You can also use a valid product key to move from Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition.

When the Trial Edition expires

No loss of functionality will occur when the Trial Edition expires, so you can maintain lab, demo, training, and other non-production environments beyond 120 days without having to reinstall the Trial Edition of Exchange 2016. You can't use product keys to downgrade from Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition, nor can you use them to revert to the Trial Edition. These types of downgrades can only be done by uninstalling Exchange 2016, reinstalling Exchange 2016, and entering the correct product key.

Note that this is an Open License and is designed for businesses with between two and 250 computers. Open licenses are perpetual licenses and the program term is two years.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 User CAL

I used Microsoft Exchange 2016 Enterprise Device CAL to replace the Linux system we were using, Cyrus. I am sure it can do more than what I am using it for, but have not had much free time to poke at it. just started using it an year ago it is a smooth excahnge server. There are critics out there, but personally, I love Exchange. Simple, effective, little downtime, few problems. Exchange 2016 runs VERY smooth.

Many good features

Microsoft Exchange 2016 Enterprise Device CAL is the way to go for corporate email, and pretty much the industry standard. Pretty easy to administrate, but some of the fancy stuff requires some knowledge Without Exchange server you really do not have full access to all of the wonderful features in Outlook. Tight integration and collaboration make Exchange essential for business email. Incredibly powerful e-mail solution Works seamlessly with our systems here. We couldn't hope for a better email solution

Long time

A stable platform that we've supported over the years. Haven't had any major issues to date. As an on-premise solution, it's a solid backend for Outlook clients. AntiSpam features out of the box are somewhat limited compared to third party solutions out there. Been using Microsoft Exchange 2016 Enterprise Device CALfor a long time. This product is great. I love this version of exchange. They keep making it better and cant wait to upgrade tonext version.
