Microsoft Exchange Server 2010

The Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 licensing model is set up in a similar way to its predecessor. There are three types of licenses that need to be considered:

Server Licenses

A Server License needs to be assigned for every instance that the server software runs. These server licenses are available in the Standard and Enterprise Edition.

Client Access Licenses (CALs)

Client Access Licenses are required for users and devices that access the server. As the name suggests, User CALs are for actual users, not matter how many different devices they use.

External Connector Licenses

External Connector Licenses are particularly useful in scenarios where the number of CALs required cannot be determined definitively. It gives access to an unlimited number of CALs accessing the Exchange Server.

Note that:

  • Both Device and User CALs are available in the Standard and Enterprise Edition.
  • A useful aspect to note is that the server and CAL license editions can be used interchangeably (ie. a Standard CAL can be used on an Enterprise Server and vice versa).

Microsoft Exchange Server 2013

Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 has significant improvements over Exchange Server 2010.

Access email and documents

Site Mailboxes which allow users to access both email and documents through the same user interface.

Improved touch features

Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 has also improved its touch features, making it more user-friendly on touch devices.

Access from anywhere

All administrative functions can be accessed from anywhere, thanks to one comprehensive web-based tool.

Perhaps the most significant is the introduction of

Data Loss Prevention (DLP)

Data Loss Prevention helps system administrators protect sensitive company data from being leaked.

SharePoint integration

The SharePoint integration has opened up a world of features for users, like Email Alerts that help track your documents even after they have been emailed.

License requirements

Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 has a great option if you require 5 or more server licenses:

Standard Open Business

Enterprise Open Business

It is a cost-effective solution to license your servers and is available through a Microsoft Volume licensing agreement. This allows you to easily manage the number of licenses you have. You may change your licensing agreement later on as the needs of your organization changes. It does still require the purchase of device and user CALs.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2016

The Standard Open Business and Enterprise Open Business licenses are available for 5 or more servers, with the option to add more at a later stage.

Choose the right licensing model

As expected, organizations have the choice of purchasing User CALs Open Business and Device CALs Open Business. In addition to the regular licensing options, Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 is also available through cost-effective volume licensing, under the Open Business licensing model. The combination of these CALs would depend on your organization’s specific needs.

Exchange Server 2016 Enterprise Open Government

Exchange Server 2016 Enterprise Open Government is tailored specifically for government departments. They may purchase any combination of licenses through one easy transaction. This includes all Device and User CALs Open Government.

User CALs Open Academic

In the academic field, the Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) has played an important role in simplifying and standardizing how Microsoft cloud services and software are licensed. Microsoft has made it easier to calculate costs and assess usage quality by using User CALs Open Academic. They allow for access to more student use benefits and free online student services. This lets academic institutions offer more value for money to their students, without compromising on key Microsoft Exchange Server features.

Microsoft Exchange Online

Exchange Online guarantees 99.9% uptime and this is implemented with a service level agreement with financial backing. That’s how committed Microsoft is to keeping your system running.

Access for calendars, emails and contacts

Microsoft Exchange Online offers all the benefits of on-premises Exchange solutions on a hosted platform. This includes access for calendars, emails and contacts on any endpoint device. Supported device include all computers and mobile devices running any iOS, Android or Windows-based operating system.

No physical servers are required

One of its greatest benefits is Exchange Online is that it removes any inconvenience related with licensing, deployment and maintenance. No physical servers are required, which eliminates any expense associated with their support. Overall, this means quite a large reduction in capital expense.

Online Protection against spam and viruses

Security is also taken care of in the form of Microsoft Forefront Online Protection against spam and viruses. Information protected with data loss prevention features that stop users from sending sensitive or classified data to unauthorized people.

Remove confidential information remotely

For use on mobile device, Exchange Online can create lists for approved devices and remove confidential information remotely if these devices are lost or stolen. Maintenance is a simple matter of automatic patches being installed, saving your organization time and effort.

Access anywhere

I like that I can access my programs anywhere. I don't have to download anything, I can use it online if I want. I also like that it is all the products are integrated with one another. I use Microsoft Exchange Online Protection Open Gov 1 Year at school and also at home. I like that because all of the different apps are connected, it makes it much easier to work with them as a whole. The calendar within email is great. I have my email pulled up and it makes sure I don't miss appointments. I also like that I can add appointments to the calendar from email.

Simpler amd more intuitive!

Management in Microsoft Exchange Online Protection Open Gov 1 Year is simpler and more intuitive in some areas than it was before with just exchange or active directory, however, Moving to O365 from a local exchange can have its fair share of headaches. Unfortunately not ALL functionality gets moved over and there are still pointers to clean up once a move is done however as a product that is not being placed into an existing mess it is a great product worth the money for any size organization.

Microsoft Exchange Online Protection Open Gov 1 Year

Microsoft is popular day by day just because of the Microsoft Office, but also because of Microsoft Exchange server, which is a cloud-based email client and it provides many advanced features like you can access your mailbox from anywhere, anytime and using any device like PC, Tablet or phone. Features given to the admin are what you would receive handling an on-prem version of exchange just slightly different in format. The nuts and bolts though are right there, the only thing that is a bit "wonky" is the sync, but that's gotten better in each version
